“How’s your new job?” a former colleague asked me. “How are the people you work with?”
“I really like my new manager.”
My spontaneous response revealed a truth. We may have fabulous peers, but it’s our manager that shapes our experience.
“You read between the lines and got what I was asking. It’s if you like your boss or not that counts. I’m glad to hear you like it. Work is where we spend most of our time.”
Which made me think about how right he was. What if we don’t like our boss? Either because we respect each other but don’t click, or we lack respect. Or our boss is absent so that we have no understanding of what we do that they value most, or he or she scrutinizes everything we do.
This one person affecting our days no matter how much we love what we do. Maybe we should rethink figuring out fulfillment. Maybe it’s not just what we can’t not do, but how we will do it no matter who we work with.
Very true. When people quit, they tend to quit their boss too!
